Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery is used to align the jaws and to treat problems associated with disproportion and asymmetry of the facial skeleton.

Indications for treatment include :

  • Facial asymmetry
  • Jaw and tooth misalignment
  • Difficulties with chewing and speech
  • Congenital craniofacial syndromes e.g. cleft lip and palate
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea

Orthognathic surgery is performed by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon after a treatment plan is formulated by a specialist Orthodontist. Braces are used to optimally correct the bite and to provide good facial balance. Treatment can be undertaken at any age, but typically it is planned for teenage years or early adult life.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic in an accredited hospital with an Anaesthetist. Oral incisions and precision bone cuts (osteotomies) are in the mouth without external incisions. Once the jaws and teeth are repositioned they are held in position with titanium bone screws and plates. Braces are required for a period of time to align the teeth in their final position.

Treatment is often predictable and successful with both improved dental alignment and positive changes in facial appearance.
